Stepping into the 21st Century
The 2000s were filled with many fantastic players.
Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, LaDainian Tomlinson, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher and Charles Woodson to name a few. Recall when free agency and the salary cap changed the NFL in the 1990s? Many accomplished players bounced to different teams and it helped make new champions. It definitely helped one team become arguably the greatest dynasty in NFL history. Rewriting the record books
The New England Patriots started the new millennium (5-11) before they began their championship chase.
With quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots won three Super Bowls in four seasons. (They would win two more titles during the 2010s) Today, the Patriots may surpass a 1970s dynasty for an astounding record. From 1966-1985, head coach Tom Landry and the Dallas Cowboys had 20 straight winning seasons. From 2001-2017, Belichick, Brady and the Patriots have had 17 straight winning seasons. It's an unbelievebale accomplishment that continues during the free agency and salary cap era, and with a 40-year old quarterback and a 66-year old head coach and general manager. Long-time losers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints had been lovable losers before the 2000s.
The "Yucs" and the "Aints" set records of futility. As ugly as their orange "Creamsicle" uniforms were, so was Tampa's beginning. In their first two seasons in 1976 and 1977, Tampa Bay lost 26 games in a row. They also posted 14 straight losing seasons from 1983-1996. New Orleans spent its first 20 years of existence from 1967-1986 without a winning record or a playoff berth. But both teams had their prayers answered when the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII and the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV. The 2000s had exciting Super Bowls and tremendous players, which you can check out below! My next blog will bring us all the way to today's NFL.
