Who's Available?![]()
As the '90s began, a new rule change instantly transformed the composition of NFL teams.
After the 1992 season, free agency, which began in the NFL in 1947, became unrestricted and made the league much more competitive. Front office members of teams could sign available athletes like Pro Bowl quarterbacks, wide receivers, cornerbacks, etc. and use the NFL Draft to quickly build a contender. However, past dynasties collapsed as free agency, along with the salary cap in 1994, made it more strenuous to keep a team together. Check out this video to learn about free agency and the salary cap. How 'Bout Them Cowboys?![]()
I'm sure you've heard of this phrase before.
It describes the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s as they became the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in four years. However, the pieces of this dynasty formed in 1989. Back then, the Cowboys were past their '70s prime and had new faces in quarterback Troy Aikman, head coach Jimmy Johnson and ownerJerry Jones. Pro Bowl running back Herschel Walker was the one shining star for the Cowboys. On their way to a (1-15) season, the Cowboys traded Walker in October to the Minnesota Vikings and got a plethora of draft picks in return. These picks turned into players like future Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, cornerback Darren Woodson and wide receiver Alvin Harper. This video goes into more detail about the monumental trade. Affecting the Game
The '90s modernized the game of football.
It became more about player movement and contracts instead of simply game plans and schemes. The decade made the NFL more competitive and interesting as the league stays in the sports news cycle all year long. It destroyed classical dynasties but created new champions like the Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Rams. Be sure to check out a '90s timeline below and my next blog soon!
