From Humble Beginnings
The NFL has come a long way since Aug. 20, 1920.
From a small organization of teams to an influential merger to one-handed catches, the NFL remains the most popular sports league in America. Nearing its 100th birthday, the NFL boasts many incredible athletes like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Todd Gurley, Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham Jr., Richard Sherman and many more. Here's some of the biggest things that's happened in the NFL during this decade. Excitement & Controversy
The NFL stands as the most popular sports organization in the United States, and has the most watched television event of every year, the Super Bowl.
But the league also has many issues with head injuries, domestic violence, performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and other topics. The NFL developed rules to limit head-to-head contact like the "defenseless player" rule, but these changes caused fans to complain. They love to see bone-jarring collisions like the one in the picture of a Denver Broncos defender hitting a Green Bay Packer receiver. Also, player offseason arrests on top of players using illegal steroids make football an extremely controversial sport today. But the NFL remains at the top of the sports world since the 1958 NFL Championship helped elevate the game, and it has a grand sense of competition among its teams each season more than other sports leagues. For example, every NFL team has a well-known player but not every NBA or MLB team does. And a 16-game football season is easier to follow than an 82-game baseketball season or a 162-game baseball season. The Best Sport There IS
Many Americans criticized the game of football years before the NFL formed because they believe the sport was too dangerous.
It's similar to fans criticizing the NFL in 2018, but just like in the past, the game of football will evolve and prevail. As for the 2010s, the decade of expanding social media helped the NFL. The league's media team utilizes Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to connect fans with their favorite teams and players. Social media, in addition to the NFL Combine, free agency, the NFL Draft and many more events keep football in the news cycle all year long. So, the main thing is that the NFL is here to stay.
